Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the magnitude and distribution of stress using a photoelastic model of a mandibular bilateral distal extension removable partial denture(RPD) with four kinds of the direct retainer, that is, Akers, RPI,
RPA(type
1) and RPA(type 2) clasp.
A photoelastic model for mandible was made of the epoxy resin(PL-2) and hardner(PLH-2) and was coated with plastic cement-1 at the lingual surface of the model, and then four kinds of RPD were set on the photoelastic model.
The vertical load of 15kg and the lateral load of 4kg were applied on the 2nd bicuspid & 2nd molar area and the stress pattern of the photoelastic model under each condition was analyzed by the reflective circular polariscope.
@ES The following results were obtained:
@EN 1. The magnitude of the stress observed around the abutment teeth according to the differently designed direct retainer under the vertical load at the 2nd bicuspid area was in the order of RPI, RPA-Type 1, RPA-Type 2 and Akers clasp. The same
stress
pattern was observed in the RPI and RPA-Type 1, and the stress pattern of RPA-Type 2 showed intermediate stress pattern of the Akers and RPA-Type 1.
2. The almost same stress pattern was observed without regard of the clasp type under the lateral load and the vertical load at the second molar area.
3. The advantage of RPA clasp design could be obtained with properly designed RPA clasp.
